Adventures in RevisionLand

Welcome to RevisionLand! Where everything is not quite as you expected it.  Where we make you think and analyze and map characters and analyze scenes and... torture your characters and the author at the same time! It's fun, fun, fun!

Actually it used to NOT be fun for me.  Now it's sort of... cool. Frustrating at times, but yeah now it's sort of... well, let's just say that it makes my author a little less unhappy to use her left brain to analyze the manuscript she's working on. And it makes her left brain and right brain happy when they both finally get on the same page and make things happen. But she's weird that way.

Since the beginning of January, the author and I have been over at Savvy Authors in a torture chamber known as Editalooza. We (along with 5 other lucky writer souls) have the great fortune of working with an editor from Lyrical Press--Adrien-Luc Sanders.  I have to give Adrien credit for something amazing... he made comments that connected with my author and her wacky ways. Adrien's insights along with the homework assignments from the workshop have made my author realize that... her first rough draft of the ms may be 50K words, but after layering and adding and deleting the few scenes that are needed to tighten the characters' growth and the overall story structure... the final ms will probably be about 15K-20K words longer.

Now for the part where I grin like the crazy muse that I am. The Seducing Elise ms is currently at 57K, there are now 4 scenes left to be added, layering hasn't completely happened yet, and the author's crit partner has decreed that January 23, 2011 is the day that the ms must be complete in 2nd draft form. Can we say that a fire has been lit under the ass of my writer like you wouldn't believe? And then some?

And while we should be panicking, we aren't. We're stoked and enjoying the crazy ride, because there ain't nothing better than a deadline to get my author fired up and focused on the end deal... which just goes to prove yet once again why my author is a fire sign.

And why the title of this post isn't Nightmare in RevisionLand. Which it might be by the end of the night if the crit partner's demands are not met. LOL--there's nothing like a challenge to get the writing switch turned to the 'Bring It' setting.

And that's it for our 10 minutes of free writing in the morning...
